Spiralling back in Trauma recovery

No one really addresses the #trauma #spiral. I am speaking about the process of despair when we return to adaptive responses. This phenomenon often occurs when our nervous system is activated. Going back to vigilance can override the progress made towards safety & stability. Often clients express these times as a failure, it foregrounds remorse and guilt.

Unless we attend to this fragile moment, the grief and sadness will be disregarded. I write a poetic response to one such moment.

Trust yourself or your process,

Hmm, easier said than done, especially under duress.

Tricky when the threat exposes inadequacy, fear and shame,

It attacks viciously, depleting the considerable resources gained.

They take us back to moments of in-congruence,

Resting in the terror of no self-awareness.

When procedural memory is called upon from the ANS shelf,

Wasting years of pulling and reaching to connect to oneself.

Regrets in these moments of landing back in the trauma spiral,

Confusion, frustration, and judgement appear unequivocal.

How does one sit alongside in this treacherous mourning,

Perhaps joining in with pausing, gesturing and grounding.

Bearing witness to our relational space of us-ness,

Easing the breathing and capacity to be compassionate.
